So we have had an election but somehow we have failed to elect a government! Could be worse I suppose, We could have had an outright Conservative government. I am not a fan of Conservative politics, I still find them a party that protects privilege. There are some hard decisions to be made about public finances and whoever has to make them must be seen to be making them in as fair handed way as is possible.

Unfortunately the big losers in public spending cuts are those that have to depend on them, unemployed, disabled, pensioner etc. Those that have money will weather the coming times but those who struggle will struggle more. We have seen what happens when you have to make Draconian cuts in public spending with Greece.

It is really important that with the impending spending review that there is at least a national consensus about what happens next. The hung parliament result has shown that the voting public have not formed a definite view on how they want the government to act. A strong coalition government could be the answer to that. Unfortunately hung parliaments do not have a history of longevity in this country.

However if the number of politicians in parliament actually reflected the way the populace voted. You've got to feel sorry for the Lib Dems. They lose out by coming second all the time. They have 8% of the seats in Parliament but got that with 23% of votes cast. Perhaps it is time for PR?
